LONDON, England -- A Trinidadian immigrant’s fate is now in the hands of the jury as he faces an attempted murder charge for allegedly shooting and trying to kill a police constable in Nottingham in February.

Prosecutors claim Trevon Thomas, of Bilborough, deliberately shot PC Rachael Bown in the Lenton area of Nottingham on February 14, 2006.

Thomas, 24, who migrated to the UK in 2000, denies the charge, saying his gun went off accidentally after he was blinded by CS spray by PC Martin Foster. The spray is used by the police to control violent criminals.

Bown was shot below her body and has not worked since the attack. In her testimony, the rookie cop wept as she recalled how she shouted at the gunman not to shoot just seconds before he opened fire in a back street. Three shots were fired, she said. The cop was hit in the stomach and is still recovering from the attack.

Thomas, who fled the scene and tried to flee to the Caribbean but was arrested three days later sitting on plane at Heathrow, also faces a possession of a firearm with intent to resist arrest and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life charges.
