BROOKLYN, N.Y. --  A second generation Bajan brother and sister duo are two of the city’s young academic achievers who are eyeing careers in medicine and the sciences.

Zachary Balgobin is a 14-year-old freshman at Brooklyn Tech High School who is interested in NASA while sister Alena Balgobin is a 15-year-old junior of Williamsburg High School of Architecture and Design who wants to be a Pediatric Psychiatrist. Both are on the honor roll at their high schools.

Zachary, since childhood, has been fascinated with rockets and with an average of 90 now wants to make that fascination a reality. “I think I have a very big interest in aeronautics, that’s probably the major field I’ll go into, and I think Brooklyn Tech would be a good stepping-stone for me,” Zachary said.

Alena is one of the top students in her school since she started attending as a freshman and her average is 96. “I want to go somewhere. I don’t want to just be like the girl down the block who got pregnant for some little boy for no reason; I don’t want to end up doing drugs; I don’t want to drop out of high school or have to work for a low paying salary. I want to be able to do something with my life and make a difference in the community,” she added.

The two will appear on Brooklyn45 on the Monday. Brooklyn45 is produced by Barbadian national Sam Taitt and airs at 2:30 pm and 10:30 pm on Time Warner channel 56, and CableVision channel 69.
