CHARLOTTE AMALIE, USVI -- Polls will be open from 7 this morning in the USVI as the runoff election for the post of governor gets underway.
John deJongh and Kenneth Mapp are facing-off again following the shortfall by deJongh in the November 7 U.S. general election. DeJongh fell two votes needed to become the next governor leading to today’s run-off.
On Friday, the Board of Elections final count showed that deJongh received 16,988 votes or 49.997 percent of the total votes cast compared to Mapp’s 9,100. DeJongh needed 50 percent 50-percent-plus-one-vote as mandated by USVI law.
The winner will replace Governor Charles Turnbull, who leaves office in January after serving three consecutive terms.
