BROOKLYN, NY --  A 23-year-old Canarsie resident has been charged with the murder of a Guyanese immigrant, who was accidentally shot dead near a subway turnstile late last week.

Dwayne Holmes has been arraigned on charges of second-degree murder, assault and assault with a deadly weapon in the killing of innocent bystander Toolsie Sukhu, 56.

Sukhu, a security guard who had been on his way home from work was near the turnstiles of Rockaway Parkway stop on the L line in Canarsie when Holmes reportedly opened fire after a rival gave him a dirty look and the two began fighting.

Sukhu was shot in the back and later declared dead at Brookdale Hospital. The rival with whom Holmes was fighting was only shot in the arm.

The Guyanese migrant’s body has been returned to Guyana for burial. His wife committed suicide about six months ago. He is survived by four children - three in Guyana and one in Brooklyn.

Holmes is set to reappear in court this week.
